| THE ENGLISH TUDOR BED AND BREAKFAST...
at 2227 72nd Ave S.E. (206-232-1373), is run by JoAnn Schenck. She and her husband Bert are 30-year residents, and have three children who graduated from Mercer Island High School. They just returned from a trip to Italy with their daughter, Jahneen, and are now readying their home for guests.
The English Tudor has two large suites, one with an extra attached room that could serve as a bedroom for a relative. One of the suites has a view of the water, and the other a garden view; both have a large bathroom and are done in warm colors.
"The feeling that I try to convey," said Schenck,

"is for people to say, 'I belong here.'
I want the place to be welcoming, and for people to feel that they're cared about." Schenck begins breakfast with fresh fruit, cinnamon or raspberry scones, followed by cheese/herb souffle utilizing fresh herbs from her garden, hash browns with steamed eggs and grated cheese, and a special brown-sugar glazed French toast dish made overnight and baked in the morning.
"Harry Reasoner once said that hotel rooms have no heart and soul," she said. "This is my hobby, being part of the hospitality business." The rooms range from $125-140 per night. "I don't ever think about money," she said. "I just think, 'keep the customer satisfied and the rewards will follow'."
